Jackson, MS (OT) - Fresh off loses to former middleweight Andrew Toney and journeyman John Ruiz, Evander Holyfield announced today that he will fight Don Zimmer for the vacant WXO Heavyweight title. Experts say Holyfield, loser of five of his last seven fights, is desperate for a victory and are openly questioning his choice of opponent. At a press conference to announce the match, the former three-time world champion justified the decision. "I seen what he done to Perdro (Martinez). He may not a landed a punch, but he showed aggression and thas what makes a good fight. Thas what the fans wanna see." Promoter Don King agreed. "He (Zimmer) may not say much and he look out of shape, but you can tell he got that crazy look in his eyes. And this is gonna be a great fight. Neither one of these guys is backin down." When asked why he would choose to fight a trainer boxer having never fought professionally, Zimmer simply replied: "They used to call me Popeye cause I was so strong. And I got a plate in my head."
After being turned down by the boxing commissions of Nevada, New Jersey, and Kansas, the fight was welcomed with open arms by the State of Mississippi. "This is just what we need to turn our economy around," said Jackson city councilman Kenneth Stokes. "We think this fight can generate about 1.2 billion dollars for our state's economy and most of that will be used right here in Jackson."
Instead of a cash payment, the winner of the fight will receive the feature car of the Jacktown Clean Ride ThrowDown, a tricked out yellow 1982 Grand Prix.
The undercard pits Martha Stewart against Mike Tyson.
